Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Quilting Quickly: Patterns, Techniques & Tips »

Instructions

When I made the original X's and O's quilt, I sewed a double line on the corners to create not only the classic shape, but also left me with 2 half square triangles per block. These were squared up and made into the pinwheel quilt.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Charity

Style: Classic

Materials

Many batik fat quarters cut into 9" squares which left a 4 x 18" strip per fat quarter. The strips I sewed into diagonal bias binding.

What was your inspiration?

Thanks to Jenny Doan for the great pattern. I so enjoyed taking Quilting Quickly I and II, and am eagerly awaiting III and IV.

What are you most proud of?

That I pieced it and then also quilted it myself.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Make sure you square up your half square triangles before you put them into pinwheels.

Thank you, the technique is super simple. I originally fell in love with the same block made into X's and O's, but the colors I used in the blocks didn't lend themselves to randomness (in my mind, anyway).

Thank you and have fun with it! Don't forget to sew the corners a half inch apart when you sew them on so that you have half square triangles for another project of for a border or something like that.

I'm glad to hear it. I've been quilting for a long time and it was still extremely informative for me.

Thank you, I liked the colors too. I have the same colors in other fat quarters that have white polka dots batiked onto them. I'm making positive/negative circles. Its a lot of work though, because I don't like raw edge applique, so I'm having to turn under all of the edges.
