with Sara Alm
Go inside Vogue Patterns' headquarters to gain designer insight before you learn to sew three distinctly elegant dresses with the included Tracy Reese V1397 Vogue pattern. Alongside Apparel Arts instructor Sara Alm, you'll sew a vintage-inspired, floral print dress with front pockets, an invisible zipper, a deep back, a raw-edged neckline and a built-in petticoat with dramatic French-seamed ruffles. Then get confident working with modern lace fabric as you construct a feminine, fashion-forward dress variation with a contrast lining, petersham ribbon seams and a slot zipper. Finally, skillfully sew a bold, graphic dress variation with a bias grain line, perfectly matched stripes and an eye-catching chevron pattern on the skirt. Master advanced sewing techniques you can use on any garment as you make designer dresses that beg to be shown off!
Visit Vogue Patterns' headquarters to meet Carlos Correa, the designer behind the Vogue Patterns brand, and learn more about the appeal of the Tracy Reese pattern. Then join instructor Sara Alm, author of Famous Frocks, in the Craftsy Studio to learn about the variations covered in the class and how to choose your fabric.
Sara gets you started on a floral-print version of the dress, with raw edges, pockets and a waist ribbon. Learn how to mark your fabric with tailor's tacks, construct the bodice, sew the neckline and create the ribbon casing.
Setting in sleeves can be intimidating, but Sara shows how the staystitch-plus technique makes it a breeze. Finish sewing your floral dress with a ruffled petticoat, French seams and an invisible zipper.
A Venetian lace dress with ribbon-covered seams will draw admiring glances from all. Sara explains how to alter your pattern pieces to create this version and sew the ribbon finish on the seams, darts and necklines. If your lace has a scalloped border, you won't even have to finish the hem.
Finish constructing the lace dress by setting in the sleeves, attaching the bodice to the skirt and sewing in a slot zipper.
If you love a more vintage look, try the bias stripe variation! Sara explains how to lay out your fabric to create chevrons. A cutting guide is also included with your class materials. You'll baste and stitch your seams so your stripes are lined up perfectly.
Follow along with Sara as you finish your bias seams, attach the facing to the neckline and sew the hem on sleeves and skirt. Now you're ready to don your frock and go out on the town!
