Meet master weaver Deborah Jarchow and learn more about the techniques and projects covered in your class. Deborah discusses factors to consider when planning your scarves, the loom size and shuttles. You'll also get tips on winding your bobbins by hand or with a winder.
Get ready to create an open-weave felted scarf by warping your loom according to the pattern supplied in your class materials. Deborah demonstrates the warping process and includes troubleshooting tips for dealing with knots in your yarn, loose tension and consistent rolling on your back beam.
Follow along as Deborah completes the warping onto the front beam and begins weaving the open-weave felted scarf. If you're good at eyeballing measurements, you can weave free-form, or use a spacer for precision. When your scarf is complete, you'll be able to felt it by hand or in a washing machine. Deborah shows you how!
Varying the density of weaving creates beautiful texture in the Windowpane scarf. Deborah weaves fine thread through a warp of variable thicknesses, then packs the picks densely or loosely according to the supplied pattern. You'll also see how to hemstitch the front end of your scarf before it's rolled onto the front beam, use spacers at the back beam to keep your shed tidy, and how to finish your piece for a professional look.
Play with a variety of fibers along with Deborah as you weave the Thick & Thin scarf. Deborah explains how the warp is set up and how the different thicknesses of yarns interact with each other. You'll also learn how to finish your ends with decorative knotted fringe or a smooth hem.
Get your wool to work for you and create a highly textured work of art simply by combining felting and non-felting fibers. Deborah weaves the Differential Shrinkage scarf with two shuttles and shows how to keep your selvages smooth. Learn how to take your weaving off the loom and how to add twisted fringe and beads.
Before committing a lot of time and fiber to a project, you'll want to sample, sample, sample. Deborah shows how to make a small sample woven with a tapestry needle on cardboard, and discusses the variables to consider when sampling on your loom. You'll explore differences in warp fibers, weft fibers and dent numbers and see Deborah's examples that highlight these differences. Finally, get a glimpse of some of the design samples Deborah has used to create gorgeous garments and scarves.
