Project

Wedding Dress

My daughter is a size 00. The smallest size this dress came in was a 2. I took up the shoulders a total of 3 inches, and took in the sides from the underarm down to below the hip to create a smooth line. I also created a small sweep train. I added the sleeves (online tutorial from Threads magazine to draft them; lace, trim, and buttons from JoAnn fabric :)). The dress is 3 layers, only attached at the shoulders. So I took in each layer separately. I carefully hand basted all three seams together so I could accurately pin the sides. I figured out the sewing line, then made a template so that all of the seams would be the same. I used the templates to run a basting stitch in bright thread to follow. The techniques I learned from Angela are priceless. I was so afraid to even attempt altering a wedding dress - it took me weeks just to actually be brave enough to take the seams apart! It is true - you can have an inexpensive garment (like this $179 dress from David's Bridal)... if it fits well, it looks beautiful. I have gotten so many compliments on her dress. Thank you Angela :)
