Valance for Bedroom Makeover

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I was really happy that my conservative cutting allowed me to make the valance from just one yard of my home decor fabric, but I am most proud of the fact that I made it up to my standards and completed the valance. As I was doing my "final" press, I melted some of my trim (I was soooo mad! I know better than this!) My husband said you could barely see it, but my standards for myself are high, so I removed ALL of the trim at the bottom, remade the entire length of 1" band, and reapplied that and the braid for a finished product that I feel good about! I still need to add the curtain panels, and will update my pics when I get there. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Watch all of the lessons, and you will be fine. This class was thoroughly taught and extremely well put together. Sue and Ellen are wonderful instructors, and true experts in their field. Don't be afraid to ask questions; the instructors are quick to respond and give helpful assistance and advice. Most of all, enjoy the creative process and learning a new skill! Oh, and my trim was heavy when layered and made the fabric puff out instead of laying in the sorts of pleats I wanted even after a thorough pressing. I simply added some loose thread tacks with a matching thread in an inconspicuous spot. Now they behave just as they should! It really wasn't that difficult to make. I rated it intermediate mostly because of the volume of fabric and the precision required for good results. A careful beginner can certainly do this too.

What you will need

  • Oatmeal Jacquard home decor fabric
  • taupe poly taffeta home decor fabric for the accents
  • 8 covered buttons
  • taupe braid
  • lining fabric
  • thread
  • fabric glue

Q&A with Farmhouse Garde

Sue Sampson & Ellen DeLucia asked:
Your valance came out great! The trim placed on top of the band adds great design detail. Can't wait to see how the drapes look when you get them mounted beneath the board.
Farmhouse Garde answered:
Thanks very much! I'll be sure to post a pic.
Kelly Dannemann asked:
That is pretty!!

Jill-1234 asked:

Kelly Dannemann asked:
I am excited to see your drapes!! Did you get them finished yet? I love your headboard.
Farmhouse Garde answered:
Not yet. I would love to finish them a.s.a.p., but I got short term notice on a family member's wedding, so I am sewing 2 dresses this month. Hopefully I will get back to it soon! Thanks for keeping me motivated!! :)
