Tall Teal Basket

Project Description

What was your source for this sewing project? Improvisational What are you most proud of? In two previous posts Fun Fabric Basket, and Acorn Squash Basket, I mentioned basic instructions for constructing these fabric wrapped cotton clothesline rope baskets, sewn with a zig zag stitches. Today I made my 3rd basket I call Tall Teal Basket. I wanted to expand on the technique for tapering a basket (wide base, narrow top). TIP: as you build the side wall, the base of the basket is tilted as high as it will go. I got maximum taper by adding one more book to the table extension, lifting the basket up higher yet and the basket automatically started to narrow successfully each row. I added some of my handmade polymer clay buttons to each of the 3 baskets I made this week. This button style is called millefiori (million flowers). To see how these are made, check out a great book, The Art of Polymer Clay, Millefiori Techniques, about $15. The book starts with basics and ends with some eye popping illustrations and instructions. It's dah bom. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Hey, did ya get your cotton clothesline rope yet? I'm waiting to see your basket projects. Best wishes.

What you will need

  • 3 cotton print fabrics
  • dark teal/black
  • medium teal/red orange
  • and wheat. I like to keep darker colors at the top
  • and finish at the top with a band of all 3 prints combined. I made some millefiori canes in polymer clay to make buttons for this tall teal basket.
