Quilted vest

Project Description

What are you most proud of? The quilting design. What advice would you give someone starting this project? I did part of the quilting before I stitched the side seams. That way I had less fabric going through the throat of my machine. Any quilting that had to cross a seam was saved till after I had stitched the seams. Use bias binding or you won't make the curves on the armholes and front of the vest. If you are going to use some pretty quilting, don't use a busy fabric that will hide all your work.

What you will need

  • quilter's cotton
  • wool batting

Q&A with SashieGirl

Mary Ray asked:
Your best is beautiful. And -- very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
SashieGirl answered:
This vest was made as a test to see how more intense quilting would affect the pattern and the feel of the fabric. It shrunk by 1" in height and 1/2" in width on the fronts. The armholes stand away from the body a bit. I think I may need to cut the armhole out a bit more on the next one. I added fabric to be sure I accounted for the shrinkage and I may have left a bit too much on the sides. I treated the shoulder seam as a dart and did manage to take some of it up, but not enough. I used wool for batting, so it's actually not too stiff, but I wonder how much the added stiffness contributed as well. If this was not quilted, I would have simply added some darts in the armhole and it would be fixed.
Deb Cavanaugh asked:
I just had to come back and see your vest again. It is just so stunning
SashieGirl answered:
Thanks, Deb.
SES asked:
Was this quilted on a long arm? Did you quilt it first? Did you have to make many modifications to get it to work?
SashieGirl answered:
It was partially done on a longarm, the pretty frilly stuff in the middle. Then I took it off the longarm and cut out the garment pieces and sewed the side seams and shoulder seams together and finished it on my domestic.
Logmein asked:
This is Gorgeous.
SashieGirl answered:
Thanks for your kind words. It was fun. When I get the next one done, I will post it, but it will be awhile, holiday quilting season is here. I'm thinking something in purple silk with luscious feathers.
