Prepping the dress form/pattern

Project Description

What advice would you give someone starting this project? This is a real life garment application of my measuring methods. Don't get bogged down in 50 adjustments. Most likely only a few will apply to you. Measure you and then compare to the pattern.

What you will need

  • Fit sample in muslin. Final fabrics will be silk chiffon
  • and Vienna silk shantung suiting (oh my goodness that is one of my favorite luxury fabrics) all done in navy with a custom fabric flower.

This is very helpful. I believe many of us are under the impression that we need a dressform which is the exact replica of ourselves. It would be great to have a lesson on how to use a dressform.
Joi Mahon answered:
I can;t tell you how many sewers are hung up on having a "perfect" patter size or a perfect dress form. Unless you have a custom one it won't be perfect. That is why you need to learn to compare where you measure to what the pattern measures. It should be logical that if a dress form or pattern is bigger or smaller in an area than you, then you make that part of the pattern either bigger or smaller. Thanks for your comment!

if you do not have a dress form can you still use thes program
Joi Mahon answered:
No you do not need one. most sewers don't have a real dress form. A form is just a 3d version of a flat pattern and they are not an exact replica of our bodies either. so if you are making patterns on a dress form you still have to adjust them for your client. This is how I developed my program
