Patchwork Bags

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I think they look fantastic. I have had lots of complments (well mum wanted one!) I wasn't sure about the blue floral, just putting the pink stripes in I feel gave it a bit of oomf! What advice would you give someone starting this project? Have fun!! Take a risk with your fabric placements, I am a bit fussy so my squares are fairly structured.

What you will need

  • I used various jungle prints for the large bag and had enough left over for the smaller one. I found some odd bits and pieces that I had because my mum loved my bag so much she wanted one too. The blue one has wadding. All bags are lined and have pockets with trim. My dad made me some large wooden buttons because I found them too expensive in the stores. These bags were fun to make and didn't take long once the fabric was cut to size.

Q&A with Tandunn

Boosmimi asked:
I love these bags, and I have been looking for a fairly easy pattern that I wanted to use. I just don't see the directions for how to make it. Can you guide me to their location or send the instructions to me? Thanks!
Tandunn answered:
I didn't use a pattern. I just looked at a tote bag that I had and based it on that. Bit of trial and error. Maybe if you google some tutorials on tote bag making they would give you an idea how to go about it.
Rennie asked:
Love your colours
Tandunn answered:
Thank you, I think that is the hardest part of doing quilting. Choosing colours and then the placement.
Rennie asked:
Nice woodwork by your Dad's, on your previous bags. So nice of him to do the handles.
Tandunn answered:
Thank you, he made the buttons only. He has just made me some toggles too!
GmaFLOR asked:
so, is just the 2 rectangle pieces, no extra piece at the bottom? what do you recommend in between the two layers?
Tandunn answered:
I cut out a small piece each side f the bottom and sew it across to make it a square bottom. You could cover a stiff piece of cardboard to place in the bottom of the bag for added strength and shape. The animal bag had thick interfacing and the blue floral bag had batting in between the layers. I didn't use anything other than the lining for the smaller animal print bag.
