Owl Laptop Tote

Project Description

What are you most proud of? IT'S ALL ABOUT THE POCKETS - STORAGE The front pocket has 2nd smaller offset pocket featuring owl embroidery design. Both pockets are lined with lime green/black cotton print backed with iron-on stablizer. The stabilizer stiffens the green/black cotton print and makes it more durable. There are 3 interior pockets. One deep interior lime green pocket holds the power cord and mouse, while the lower end of the deep pocket is subdivided into 2 small hidden pockets--each marked by tiny lime green buttons. The buttons serve as "markers" where hidden pockets are located. You only have to "feel" for the button to find the hidden pocket. The two hidden pockets are small enough to hold folded cash, cards, and flash drives. I used polar fleece for batting to free motion quilt the lime green/black cotton print lining (see photo). The bottom fabric is never seen--but provides a foundation for free motion quilting. See photos of double tab 22" heavy duty zipper and box construction. I made the polymer clay beads to decorate the laptop, stringing them on a black shoestring, adding a large peace symbol charm from my old jewelry collection (the old days when I was a hippie). What advice would you give someone starting this project? I used a NEW 16/100 sewing machine needle on my general purpose sewing machine for straight stitching and zig-zag techniques required for this project. A heavy duty 16/100 sewing machine needle plows through the upholstery fabric seams. TIP: I ALWAYS cut my fabric pieces to size first, and never use my serger to cut away fabric. Lesson Learned: It was an awful experience getting heavy duty fabrics STUCK in my serger. Be wise. Don't use your serger to cut away fabric. Replacing serger knives is expensive. I use my serger only to establish a clean/healed edge prior to sewing assembly on my general purpose sewing machine.

Q&A with Shoestring

TanjaH asked:
Ooh, this tote is cool looking! The construction looks perfect! I won't admit how much I've paid for totes that didn't have this level of quality in department stores. I'm with 2strings, selling your patterns would be awesome.
Shoestring answered:
Hi dear friend. Thanks for the enthusiastic note about the purple laptop tote. When the snow hits the ground, I'll start working on a pattern and photos. I love making these.
