My 40th Birthday Bombshell Dress

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I love the fit and the look of this dress on me. I never thought I would say that about this type of dress since I have always ruled out fitted skirts on me. I have changed my opinion on that and think I have a whole new type of skirt to try out now! I'm also proud of how it turned out and I really do think it looks as good as anything I could have bought in a boutique. What advice would you give someone starting this project? I really do feel that you will need to have made a few dresses before you attempt this project. Take the time to get the fit right - I can't stress that enough! There is so much work that goes into this dress - more than those "sew in 3 days" type dresses. I found it a wonderful process and I really enjoyed slowing down and doing all that hand sewing. After all - that's how I started before I even had a machine. LADIES WHO NEED TO WEAR A BRA - take heart - I'm wearing a padded strapless bra under this dress. It didn't show and it actually provided me with most security/modesty in that area. Whilst it did look ok without a bra, I was way more confident with one on and everything sat where it should. I was freaking out throughout the initial sewing process wondering how all that was going to work. I would suggest purchasing a good strapless bra before you start (and try lots on because I tried on some doozies) and then wear it during the muslin fitting.

What you will need

  • I used a Cotton Shantung that was a dream to sew with. It washed and ironed easily and didn't slip when sewing. I would use this fabric again if I had a similarly styled dress to sew. I lined it with cotton.
