Project

Couture dress - sleeveless sheath

Project Description

What are you most proud of? The piecing really came out well, as did the alignment of the top and hem, which I was worried about because fabric was so floppy. Also I'm pleased that all the fabric and supplies together came in under $50. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Go slowly and in manageable chunks, and check back at the lesson videos often. Even though I'd made basically the same dress before, I would have forgotten some steps and hints otherwise.

What you will need

  • *Very* unstable
  • lofty acrylic blend orange and white fashion fabric with a polyester crepe underlining and olive beige polyester lining.

Very, very pretty. Love the color on you, and the fit looks perfect.
Hopeful sewer answered:
Thanks! You can't go wrong with orange. :-)
Rebecca P. asked:
it came out beautiful. I read where you said the fabric was loosely woven...I love that type of fabric but it always unravels at the garments stress points, at least on ready to wear. Did the underlining fix that problem? You really did a fantastic job and it fits perfect. : )
Hopeful sewer answered:
The underlining helps a lot and so, I think, does the catchstitching. To be honest, I clip a lot less close to the staystitching than Susan does. With a loose weave I can ease the fabric in anyway. And thanks!
MaTere asked:
The dress you made looks very well finished and, it looks great on you. My biggest problem with sewing is trying the dress on myself to make any adjustments. I'm curvy and everything I buy I need to adjust here or there. It sucks!
Hopeful sewer answered:
Thanks! I don't know where you live, but you may want to see if there is a sewing-related MeetUp group in your area. Having someone to help you fit does help so much, and you may be able to find some others in your same situation. Good luck!
suz2creative asked:
Lovely dress. I liked the way you raised the neckline in the back. I plan to do this to my dress as well. Looks beautiful on you!
Hopeful sewer answered:
Thanks. I raised it on the initial dress as Susan suggested because of the weight of the sleeves, and liked the fit so much that I kept the raised neckline for the sleeveless version. As an aside, a 22" zipper works perfectly with the raised neckline, at least for me.
