Airline travel bag

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I am proud I was able to use a bag that I would not have used otherwise and proud to make something so useful. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Pick a hipster bag that is thin, but has several pockets. The straps need to be reinforced on the bottom of the bag to hold the weight. I used long Velcro strips and they overlap nicely.

What you will need

  • This is a travel tote that mounts directly on to the plane's seat back tray table and keeps everything from snacks
  • passport
  • tickets
  • books or Kindle at your fingertips throughout the trip! I made mine from a hipster bag. On a recent trip to China I hooked it to the tray table and was able to keep up with my Kindle
  • pen
  • tissues and even my ear buds. My seat mates were amazed at this handy travel tote. After the flight
  • I just folded the travel bag up and put it in my suit case until the return flight. I had a hipster bag which I was able to deconstruct and make a tote that I could use on an airplane seat back tray. The original bag fit across the shoulder and had straps long enough to be cut and used as handles over the plane's seat back tray to hold the tote in place. My bag measured 11" by 12" and the straps were 50" long. I cut the strap in half so that each strap was 25" long. Then I cut each strap in half again so that I had two straps connected to the tote and two loose straps; each straps measured approximately 12 1/2". I left the straps this long because I wasn't sure how big the seat tray would be. I opened the seam at the bottom of the bag and the sewed the loose straps to the bottom of the tote
  • being sure to space them so they matched the straps at the top of the bag. I added a long strip of Velcro to each strap so that the bag would stay in place on the tray. My hipster bag came with a place for my ear buds to hang outside the bag. You can add this to your travel tote by making two button holes approximately 1" each in the form of a cross and then cutting a small hole for the ear buds to fit. I was lucky that my hipster had so many pockets for different items. Try to choose a hipster with several pockets. This can also be made from fabric
  • but I had the hipster and decided to use it instead of making one.
