Pattern Details

The sewing pattern and washable, sewn, fabric picture frame for the 8x10" photo was featured in Sew It ...Today magazine, in the August / September issue, #11, "Framed" tutorial, on pages 55-59, using Fabric Editions "Fabric Loft" Trapeze collection, in Medallion and Chevron, available in Target in their craft department, and at target.com I was given the task to use Fabric Editions fabric, which was to promote the line in the Target stores, and as a new sewing project for sewists, quilters, seamstresses, designers, and crafters to use and sew fabric, for their readers. I also did a frame for a 5x7" photo. This frame is great, because the picture frames using fabric, out on the market, are not made washable. You can use scrap fabric from previous projects, neckties, clothes, recycled or upcycled fabric, leftover fabric, even t-shirts or tablecloths, if you want. It's great for DIY wedding or shower gifts, place card frames, or favors! I reconfigured how I used Thermoweb fusible web, and figured a way to make the parts sewn, so that the whole frame was one piece, just parts sewn, making a pocket for the photo and protective sleeve. I saw that an acid free sheet protector cut slight larger than the photo worked fine. And the frame has 2 pockets on the back, one for the easel back board, and one for the strut leg board, for the boards to slide out. There are 2 button holes to hang the frame, horizontally or vertically, and all you need to do is use your zigzag stitch function on your machine, and use the narrowest stitch length, and widest stitch width on the machine. You'll use the Thermoweb, found in Michaels by the roll, use a 50% coupon to get a 5 yard roll for $5, or buy it at Joann's, AC Moore, etc. The Thermoweb will be used for your patterns, it also helps keep the structure of the frame stiff and sturdy, helping the fabric from pulling, from puckering, even helping many non washable fabrics become washable, like satin, it keeps the frame's shape, after wash! There are still some fabrics that are not washable, so be careful selecting fabric- tip: if the fabric singes to your iron, and is sensitive even with a clean cloth or pillowcase between the iron and fabric desired for the frame - don't use it for this frame. I use Thermoweb's Ultrahold found in the stores mentioned, it is acid-free, slightly thicker, but fully workable. I've been sewing with it for 14 years. However, the Heat N Bond Lite or Featherlite, which can be found in Michaels is good for this project, and can be bought by the 5 yard roll for the same price as Ultrahold. The ribbon joins the bottom right corners of both the easel back panel and strut leg pocket, to allow for the frame to stand up on a table or shelf. If you only want to use a patterned repeat for the frame front, frame easel back panel, and/or strut pocket front panel, that's fine, too, just use a solid or coordinating fabric for the remaining parts. I wouldn't use too thick a fabric, no thicker than bottom weight, or denim. If you use upholstery, just use it on the frame front border (front of the frame). Sew slow. Use a 3 length on your machine. You can always go back over your stitch line again, and that will reinforce the stitch. Thank you very much for buying this pattern, even reading this information, in thinking about making this frame yourself!
