WIP Civil War Sampler

Project Description

What are you most proud of? My lines are a little straighter without using a ruler as a guide. What advice would you give someone starting this project? I like marking the dots - gives me a definite target. I still don't know what I will do in the borders. And stitching in the ditch took FOREVER! But I am a fan of Cindy Needham's ESS (Every Stinkin' Seam) - in my case, it's MESS (Most Every Stinkin' Seam) LOL!

What you will need

  • cottons
  • Aurifil thread for piecing
  • Isacord & Bottomline threads for quilting

Q&A with Darns

Pam NZ asked:
Hey Darns this style of quilting is just perfect for these blocks! I have been resisting signing up for this one but I think you just blew the last of my wont power away LOL! Go girl!
Darns answered:
Thanks, Pam! I got really tired of making half-square triangles for this one! But it was fun to try these traditional blocks with a little more modern color scheme.
desna asked:
Whoop whoop Darns, wow your quilting is super. I have bought both of these classes and you have me wanting to get started straight away. Love what you have done with these blocks. Thanks for the inspiration again:)
Darns answered:
Thank you, desna! I'm trying to not over quilt this one - I want to keep it softer.
NanaJeanFL asked:
Another fantastic work Darns! So fresh and modern with fabulous quilting. Not what I'd expect from a Civil War quilt (can you see my narrow thinking showing) You really have a great eye for design. Love the colors. Love it all! Nicely done!!
Darns answered:
Thanks so much, Jean! Needless to say, I'm definitely not drawn to Civil War repro fabrics! I was really relieved to get some inspiration from this class as I was totally clueless as to how I was going to quilt it.
KarrieLynn asked:
This is inspiring, hanks for sharing.
Darns answered:
Thank you for commenting, KarrieLynn!
LemonPie asked:
Beautiful! I esp love the way you quilted the centre star of the main picture- very inspiring!!! and your fabric choices are great: really like the colour combinations & the contrast- modern twists on these traditional blocks. Delightful!
Darns answered:
Thank you! I think I tried every design in this class in this quilt. I trying to not get the quilting too dense to keep the quilt softer but I had to try the narrow lines of quilting in the star.
