Tumbling Blocks

Project Description

What are you most proud of? Truly, I am MOST proud of the fact that I was able to get back sewing again... we had a house fire back in March, with a lot of smoke damage, and have had to vacate for a while... still sorting that all out, but am glad that I thought to pack out my sewing machine and BOM fabrics... Still not sure if I will be participating in the entire BOM, but I am glad to contribute a July block. I've missed this! What advice would you give someone starting this project? Follow Laura Nownes' instructions... she is a calm and detailed teacher. Above all, be very attentive in selecting the proper fabrics. You must have an arrangement of light, medium, and dark value to get the 3-D effect. Press the seams open. Use a spritz of spray starch to help keep the bias cuts from stretching. If you want to try a hollow block, go for it! Just be prepared to have a LOT more seams to iron open! Also, you will have to be very diligent about getting everything lined up in the proper order. There is a lot of planning involved! It is a bit of a brain teaser!! :)

What you will need

  • Class materials
  • from the kit
  • plus fabrics from my polka dot stash. I used a 60-degree triangle ruler for some of the cuts.

4bird2 asked:
Incredible, well worth extra seams for the effect. And what a great choice of fabric. I'm so glad you're back sewing!!!
Di4N4 answered:
I'm so glad, too!! Thank you, 4Bird!! :)
Darns asked:
So fabulous! Hopefully, doing a little sewing will help with the huge stresses of dealing with a house fire - you need some "you" time!
Di4N4 answered:
It is so good to be thinking about quilt blocks instead of those other stresses! We are just waiting for some details to be straightened out with our insurance company, then the fun of rebuilding will bee occupying all of my time. So I am taking advantage of this time to do what I love! Thank you for commenting, Darns!
Linda Hess asked:
Cool trick!! Thanks for the tips on doing the "hollow block" Don't know if I can pull it off, but you inspire me! I love the optical illusions in quilting, and the 3D effects glad you could sew this month!!
Di4N4 answered:
Aww, such kind words. Thank you!
NanaJeanFL asked:
Absolutely spectacular!! You've inspired me to give the hollow block in the middle a try. Sorry to hear about the fire. My son went through that. Sure glad you're able to sew again :D
