The Weekender Bag

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I could not find a sturdy 16 inch zipper so I altered the top closure to use an 18 inch double zipper. I've never installed one before and had no instructions. I reinforced the stitching in many areas both inside and out and added stabilzing seams to the straps. I had to trim some of the pieces to accomodate the alterations and it came out just fine. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Double, even triple, stitch main seams. If you use a double zipper center it on the length of the top seam and make sure you fold under the edges before sewing in the zipper. Finish the ends of the handle sleeves to ease the insert of the PVC pipe and allow the straps to move without stressing those ends. Fold over the double print fabric to finish the tops of the pockets. Add more pockets if you like. You may want to add a large snap closure on the zipper tabs to accomodate packing it empty. You may want to add some velcro to the outside pockets to help keep things in. It is completely washable and can be machine dried with the PVC pipe in place. You can line dry if you prefer. You can even remove the straps and PVC pipe to launder if you like.

What you will need

  • Double side print quilted fabric
  • 18 inch double zipper
  • bias tape
  • thread
  • PVC pipe
