The "right stuff" purple

Project Description

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Do lots of test and make sure that you really wash the fabric well. The dye also needs to be fairly warm but not hot as it can melt the fibers.

What you will need

  • White matte milliskin
  • white tutu net

Q&A with sharpsewer

Spenie asked:
Beautiful! My sister wants me to make a Tutu for my niece that is a serious ballerina. She's going to attend a college where she can continue professionally. Do you have a source for your patterns?
sharpsewer answered:
Hi, I taught myself how to make professional tutus using Claudia Folts (Tutu.com) book. Tutu.com http://www.tutu.com/ also has seminars and I have attended two: one on making bodices + a Spanish style skirt and another on mens' tailoring, stretch boots and embellishment. The leotard shown is made from a Tutus that dance pattern (Suzanne Dieckmann) she too sells patterns + instructions on how to make tutus and gives classes. https://www.facebook.com/TutuPatterns and http://www.tutusthatdance.com/. I have an Etsy shop that sells tutus and other ballet things SharpSewing on Etsy if she wanted to check that out. Making a tutu is more engernering really then sewing; not hard once you know what you are doing. It has to fit very very well. If your nieces is a professional dancer she will appreciate something made for her. At this point I am drawing my own patterns, based on the dancer's measurements. Again I taught myself how to sew leotards (with some help from a costumer friend)
