The Back is the Front

Project Description

What was your inspiration? I wanted to practice and challenge myself with free motion quilting. I am working on several areas at the same time. I am pushing myself to learn about thread weights, how to use thread color and weight in pieced quilts, and borders. I also wanted to apply some new FMQ techniques on an actual quilt. Late last year I learned how to make a quilt as go quilt using a serger. I modified the technique by using a traditional pieced center medallion, that I could, on small scale, practice FMQ. However, I instead of a using print fabric on the back and thread that would blend in, I used solid fabric with contrasting thread to highlight the FMQ design. The pieced "front" would mostly show off the piecing and minimally show the FMQing. The "back would show off the FMQing, mistakes and all! lol

What you will need

  • Cotton Fabric
  • 80/20 fusible batting
  • Trilobal 30wt and 40wt embroidery thread.
