Scrap Happy

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I wouldn't say proud but I'm always surprised by how much pink I always have in my scrap basket. Ha! This type of quilt is fun for me to make because it has little bits and pieces of everything I do in it. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Don't throw away any scraps!! I still have TONS of scraps left after I made this queen sized quilt and with the cost of fabrics today we can't afford to be wasteful!

Q&A with mmauch

K Lee 2Strings asked:
Love your year end project idea! This is a great way to use up those scraps and have something brand new. The strip piecing is fast and fun, too. I love seeing what other people have in their fabric stash. I am always surprised to discover that my color palette doesn't change all that much over the years. I know exactly what you mean about the pink. I'm always surprised to find that my largest color groupings are usually the reds and greens.
mmauch answered:
We do tend to stick to our favorite colors, don't we? Strip piecing is definitely fast and fun - I sewed 30 of these blocks on a Sunday, which was about half of the quilt top. If I hadn't gotten tired of looking at the same fabric over and over I probably would have kept going. Ha!

I love your quilt and the idea behind it. Thanks for the encouragement for me to keep learning and using up those scraps.
mmauch answered:
Thank you. It's fun coming up with new ideas and very rewarding to be able to use what I have instead of going to buy more fabric (which I don't need).
Arlene C asked:
I also collect my scraps but even have a difficult time deciding what to do with them. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a great 2013.
mmauch answered:
Older patterns, like from the 30's, are a great source for scrap quilts because they never threw anything away and were very resourceful on finding ways to use their scraps. Good luck Arlene!

I didn't think to share that my way of using up scraps this year has been endless doll clothes. I am loving it but I need to get back to quilting very soon.. My daughter has a preschool in their home and I thought I would make a big doll clothes collection and I want you to know, I used mostly scraps and not new fabric. However I am going to make a doll quilt also so I will be quilting with the rest of youl.
mmauch answered:
I used to make and sell Barbie Doll clothes and I know the work that goes into sewing them. What little girl wouldn't love to have a new doll dress and a matching quilt!! Go for it!
