Ruler Work with a Domestic Machine

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I am so glad I finally took the plunge and used quilter's rulers(templates) to free motion quilt curves and straight lines. What advice would you give someone starting this project? You don't need a longarm to quilt beautiful quilts. If you have a domestic sewing machine give FMQ with templates a try.

What you will need

  • Quilter's rulers for domestic machine
  • sample cotton quilt sandwiches and polyester thread.

Q&A with Dena_Living Water Quilter

Denise S asked:
Beautiful work. I had no idea you could use a ruler to FMQ on a domestic machine. If you only have two hands, how are you holding the ruler and moving the fabric??? Seriously I would love to learn to do what you have done here on my domestic machine. Gorgeous.
Dena_Living Water Quilter answered:
Hi Denise, Thank you. I thought the same thing! Then I learned about Fine Line Quilter's Rulers by Accents in Design. Their rulers have a resistance strip on the underside of the ruler and finger grips. Together you can hold the ruler in place and move the fabric freely.
Kimmy Brunner asked:
*Beautiful* work!!! I especially love your experiments in opposing lines and angles. What a great way to add interest and movement to a quilt. Love!
Dena_Living Water Quilter answered:
Thank you! I can't wait to get started on the class projects.
Sharonrenee asked:
Where did you get the ruler? Would like to get one.
Dena_Living Water Quilter answered:
Hi Sharon, I am so excited about these rulers! They are from Accents in Design. You easily find them online.
bichon lady asked:
thinking about trying these rulers.. Could you please make a suggestion as to which one to try first. Like the arc sm med or lg. Thanks Diane
Dena_Living Water Quilter answered:
Hi Diane! I suggest trying the small straight line and small continuous curve rulers I used for these samples. I believe starting small will help in getting familiar and comfortable using the rulers. The curve and straight are are a good combo. However, if you only want to purchase one the curve ruler is fun! I would love to know how it works out for you.
JBlixt asked:
Wow!! I didn't know there were rulers to use with the domestic machine. You did an incredible job, I'm blown away!
Dena_Living Water Quilter answered:
Isn't this exciting news! Thank you! :-D
