What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Take your time when doing the layout so that your light bulbs are evenly spaced.
What you will need
Fabrics: Good quality white fabric with a tight weave so the ink won't run (I used a quilt shop quality Moda)
striped fabric for binding
Be sure to cut your striped fabric on the bias so it will curve nicely around the circular mat.
To add color: Derwent Inktense pencils in red
mixed with a fabric medium. (I prefer Sherry Rogers-Harrison's InkFusion medium which is available through her site sewfarsewgood.org) A Gelly Roll pen in Stardust to add some sparkle. A very fine tipped black pen
like a Sharpie or a black Gelly. If you don't have quick access to Derwent pencils (which can be found at Michael's or JoAnn's stores) then use Gelly roll pens instead. If you use Gelly pens
you will not need a fabric medium.
For the quilting: a circle template
a blue water soluble marking pen
a ruler to create the guidelines for design layout.
Pattern: Use the circle design in the Going In Circles lesson in the 'Machine Quilting With Templates' class
