Orange Crush

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I am learning how to hand-embroider and be creative in using different fibers. I am looking forward to making another piece now that I have gained some experience using a lot of different techniques. What advice would you give someone starting this project? There are endless possibilities for the project. It is art more than quilting. This was my first attempt and there are so many things I want to try.

What you will need

  • Batik fabric
  • rattail cording
  • rick rack
  • gold ribbon
  • and various embroidery threads
  • and miscellaneous threads for the decorative stitching.

Q&A with Arlene C

Carol Ann Waugh asked:
Beautiful work! Yes, it is art and now, you are an artist!
Arlene C answered:
Thank you, Carol Ann. The word artist and Arlene have never been used in the same sentence!!! LOL But I do love this form of abstract art. It always bothered me to sew a crooked seam and not match colors but now it is a freedom of expression. Thanks for opening the door for me.
Nancy-Tait asked:
This is simply beautiful!!! Again you inspire me! :) An artist indeed!!!
Arlene C answered:
I hope you are taking this course, Nancy. It is so much fun to learn to be creative with the sewing machine. It also gives you a chance, with embroidery, to make a piece entirely unique to you. It is so much fun.
QuiltyJan asked:
Very pleasing and interesting use of color and stitches. These projects are bright cheery pieces. Well done.
Arlene C answered:
Yes, these projects are so much fun and are easy to occupy time between other projects. I've been busy digging around in my old bins looking for stuff I can couch. I'm happy I didn't get rid of all those unused things.
Appliquer asked:
Arlene - it is not usual that one would just begin and create with such a flair for color and design. If I may ask, what type of job did you retire from? Had you been using these skills in your job? Thank you for sharing and I really love your Orange Crush design - colors - and use of both machine and hand embroidery so well. It is a happy piece.
Arlene C answered:
Appliquer--Thank you for such a nice comment. I retired from an administrative support position. The job required other people's work to look professional and be easy for others to understand using limited resources, mainly my computer. That was the extent of my creativity. I always loved using a sewing machine and when the newer ones came along with beautiful stitches, it renewed my desire for sewing. That's when I decided I'd like to try quilting. The more I learn about it, the more I want to try different challenges.
Irene Lowe asked:
This is just lovely! I really like your choice of thread colours. I have just signed up for this course so looking forward experimenting with the stitches on my machine.
Arlene C answered:
Thank you, Irene. You will enjoy this course. It is a fun and easy way to be creative and also use the stitches on your sewing machine. I am now not only addicted to fabric but also thread.
