Nautilus shell

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I think the design balances very nicely, both the shapes and the colours. I was trying to get the vibrancy of the blues in the water, and to make it turn gradually into the beach. Piecing the centre of the shell was of course a challenge, although oddly enough the worst part was a row of very small triangles where the fabric was a looser weave and started to stretch on the bias. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Unless you are good at drafting, cheat! Find a shell you like on Google Image, print it out, scale it up on the photocopier, and work with that for templates using the Ruth McDowell freezer paper method. You will need to be very good at small curved piecing and partial seams, and I suspect that it is much easier to sew this by hand than by machine.
