Modern Baby Quilt

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I like the section with the large applique flower. I love how the little triangles around the edge add a little extra zing. I used Superior MonoPoly to quilt the swirls. I wanted to be able to see the quilting but not the thread. I knew that from taking the Quilting Negative Spaces class on Craftsy, I could do some really nice quilting around this flower. I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to FMQ but i'm really happy with the way this turned out. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Have a go. It's a very simple pattern and on a relatively small quilt like this there are lots of of negative space that provides opportunities to try out new quilting techniques. I was pressed for time finishing it so unfortunately "fell back" on stippling for around the circular flowers. Ideally I would have liked to spend a little more time on this section and really try out some other sorts of quilting.

What you will need

  • 100% cotton fabric
  • Bamboo batting and a variety of threads for quilting. I use a mix of thread depending on what I'm working on. I don't stick to only one type. This quilt has Aurifil 50wt
  • SoFine 40wt variegated
  • Rainbows 40 wt variegated
  • Magnifico
  • King Tut... The list goes on - I got carried away with stitching in different colours around the "flowers" (circles)

Thanks - it was really fun to make and yes, my friend loved it :)

Viv this is an absolutely adorable baby quilt :) Your FMQ looks so good.
Viv S answered:
Thanks Scheri. It was a lot of fun to quilt. It was for a friends first grand daughter. Little Sophie is about 15 months now and she loves it too - especially the little triangles apparently :)
