I think it's safe to say that she suggests buying a fat quarter bundle simply for a large variety of fabric. There's about 9 yards total in the one she chose, and there's no way you would ever use that much in a lap quilt. I think that you could start by picking out 15- 20 fat quarters you like together, along with the yardage for your background solid, and have plenty of fabric for the quilt.
