Lily's Advent Calendar

Project Description

What was your source for this quilting project? Other What are you most proud of? Although it was a "cheat" project, the panel being pre-printed, it needed a bit of care in box-pleating some of the pockets. I free-motion quilted it very roughly and quickly and finished the whole project in a day. I hope that Lily will love it and that it will be used over and over again, every December until she is grown up. I also think the addition of the sequins and beads gave it a very festive finish as, although it doesn't show in the photographs, they sparkle in the light. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Go for it! You can make it as simple or as fancy as you like.

What you will need

  • Cotton pre-printed panel
  • cotton fabric backing
  • polyester wadding and beads and sequins to embellish the finished calendar.

Q&A with patz in suffolk

Ladymax asked:
Soooooo cute.
patz in suffolk answered:
Thank you - it was soooooo easy, too!
Pam NZ asked:
Aaaawww this is just gorgeous Patricia! You're not going to believe this, but I am about to make this same one for my great niece! Did you FMQ before you put the pockets on or put the pockets on before doing anything else? I haven't got any further than looking at it LOL but you've spurred me on! Must add some extra sparkle too! Thanks yet again!
patz in suffolk answered:
Yes - pockets first (you might have some difficulty in doing it the other way round!). A few sequins make all the difference. I look forward to seeing your finished calendar (although, since it's a printed panel it won't be a lot different - or are you going to surprise me?)!
Darns asked:
How special for Lily! I love both of your Advent calendars. They will be treasured for years to come!
patz in suffolk answered:
Thank you! I do hope they will keep them from year to year and not put them in a cupboard and forget them! I shall go and inspect on an annual basis! Ha, ha! Great-granny's watching!
Humbledaisy asked:
Very cute - Are you going to put sweets in the pockets or little gifts? That could be a whole new holiday tradition!
patz in suffolk answered:
I think it's going to have to be sweets! Lily and Leon are only two and a half years old, so little presents might just get stuck up noses or in ears! One chocolate sweetie a day won't do any harm! Glad you like it - I do hope it WILL become a family tradition on the run up to Christmas!
soma1773 asked:
Wow! Another beautiful advent calendar. Christmas will be very magical at your house this year :)
patz in suffolk answered:
Thank you! Both the children live some way away from me and so I don't see them very often. Hopefully, their parents will hang the calendars in their houses and bring them out every Christmas until Lily and Leon are grown up. I do love tradition!
