Lesley's quilt is done!!

Project Description

What are you most proud of? My FMQ is approaching respectable!! I did use bits of FMQ motifs from all the classes I have taken at Craftsy. But I absolutely love Leah's ideas. I actually did free motion stitch in the ditch! Wandered off every now & then but since I have given up on perfection, no big deal (use the 10 foot rule). I can wander off with the walking foot!! I did use the walking foot for the long seams to SID. I love the pieced back plus I have no scraps to deal with - any leftover fabric will go with quilt - Lesley can figure out how to save them What advice would you give someone starting this project? When quilting, be sure that your entire quilt top is on the surface of your work area -moves so much easier that way. Drag is your enemy! I think Cindy Needham has the right idea - ESS! - stitch in the ditch on Every Stinkin' Seam - or in my case MESS - Most Every Stinkin' Seam - the quilt blocks are so flat & easy to FMQ. Draw a line at the edge of the quilt for the No Quilt Zone - that way you won't cut off tips of some of your feathers with the binding like I did. Love spray basting! No ruined fingers from pinning I used Bottomline thread in the bobbin with Isacord & metallic threads on the top. I think in the future I will use Bottomline for SID - the thread is fine enough that it about disappears on both sides.

What you will need

  • Cotton fabrics
  • metallic thread
  • Isacord & Bottomline thread

Q&A with Darns

patz in suffolk asked:
Beautiful! And thank you for all the tips - they'll be very useful to me. My FMQ is nowhere as good as yours and I don't seem to be able to keep myself in the ditch either. I'm doing it the easy way - one block at a time - so it'll take a long time for me to finish it. Congratulations on having made a wonderful quilt!
Darns answered:
Thank you, Pat! There must be a way to stitch a straight line but I haven't found it yet!
patz in suffolk asked:
PS. I love the back!
Darns answered:
PS me too!
desna asked:
Massive Congrats on finishing you quilt and what a beauty it is... Amazing blocks, amazing quilting, amazing fabrics. LOVE this quilt, lucky Lesley.
Darns answered:
You're the best, desna! A fun year, yes? Keep wondering what they have in store for 2013
Ann Rowley asked:
Beautiful! I love the feather border - and the back.
Darns answered:
Thanks, Ann! Piecing the back was time-consuming but worth it, I think, just not to have a load of scraps leftover.
TanjaH asked:
Congrats on finishing and love the feathers.
Darns answered:
Thank you! I never thought I'd like doing the feathers but now I love them.
