Q&A with Donna Estes

Cindy Needham asked:
This is your FIRST ONE???? Holy smokes...this is gorgeous! Beautiful work. Just an FYI for future quilts though...I see you have puckering and pulling in the surrounding unquilted areas. Try and stabilize everything equally FIRST before doing really dense quilting in any area of a quilt. In other words do all your stitching in the ditch first and that will evenly nail everything down. Then go back and quilt your feathers, etc. thru the whole quilt. Then, and only then, do all your dense background quilting. Gorgeous quilt though...congratulations!!!!
Donna Estes answered:
Thank you so much for the compliment and advice, I was wondering why this was happening. I have learned so much from your class, best class ever, only wish I had taken it before I started this. I think I should of pulled my material a little snugger when basting. I started quilting this right before I started your class. So I had only stitched in the ditch around each block, had never heard about ess. I am deciding how to quilt each block as I get to them. I am jumping around the quilt to try and minimize the puckering though. I am trying to incorporate as many quilting stitches as I can, this will hang in my sewing room, kind of as an inspiration for future quilting decisions. I have 13 more blocks done with 3 left. Will post a photo as soon as it is finished. Hopefully with in a week. Oh and I love scribbling!!!! Never heard of that before either. You are awesome!
