Project

John Lennon

Project Description

What are you most proud of? that i did it as a quilt as you go and, of course, that it's a finished project instead of a UFO. What advice would you give someone starting this project? try it out, the class makes complex images very easy to achieve.

What you will need

  • Kaufman Kona Cotton for the face
  • Benartex New York State of Mind for this brick wall
  • and the Yellow Submarine Line for the blue in the eye glasses that has the text "All You Need Is Love" on it over and over again. The batting is two layers of Quilters Dream 80/20. I did a facing instead of a binding because i didn't want anything to deter from the image of John Lennon. I kept the seam ripper edges crisp so the image would remain sharp.

Michael Chylinski asked:
I'm not worthy! Did you freehand that? Did you project it! I mean the simplicity of design and the shadow and light is what makes it amazing! This is different than, I think, Carol might have expected, but am awesome departure! Thank you. Can I have a Billie Holiday please?
kluedesigns answered:
thank you michael. i mocked up a digital image of lennon in the computer making it more fabric friendly and having detail that was within my skill level. i printed out the final image at the size i wanted (the entire quilt is 34 inches square). i then transferred a line drawing onto heat away embroidery stabilizer. the real departure from the class was doing it as a "quilt as you go". i put down the backing, 2 layers of batting (i like double batting in wall hangings), then the lightest grey fabric, then the black fabric, followed by the line drawing on the stabilizer. i free motion quilted the image of lennon onto the quilt sandwich. when that was done i got out the seam ripper and ripped away at the black fabric every where that i wanted the light grey fabric to show. then i did fusible applique of the medium grey fabric. Holiday would be perfect because of her iconic look.
