Jim's USN quilt

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I love that this is a quilt unique to my son's experiences in the Navy (or in ROTC) so far - the images are all representative of ships and units he has worked with for the past 5 years. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Finding the novelty fabrics proved to be the biggest challenge. Even in a huge Navy town, there are only a couple of places that sometimes carry military novelty prints. I ended up ordering mine online. Be sure that you have a plan and order enough fabric. I had to piece the back, and wanted to match the pattern at the seam (which takes more fabric) but I almost did not have enough to do it right!

What you will need

  • I used quilting cottons
  • some of which are novelty prints (the USN print for the border
  • Virginia Tech print in the blocks
  • as well as the USN seal print on the back -- not shown). I printed the images onto special fabric using my computer and appliqued them onto the squares. I machine appliqued the anchors
  • USN
  • dates
  • VT and HT.
