In The Garden 2013 BOM

Project Description

What are you most proud of? The final layout was a long time coming. I was able to adjust the block sizes to work in columns. I downsized the tumbling blocks and used "Y" seam techniques to inset the two side patches. My first mitered border came out well. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Don't be intimidated up front with the class sample quilt. You can always adjust to your own liking. Keep your overall color scheme in mind as you go. Wait until the end to create your Stripey Spools. They act more like fillers than blocks.

Q&A with NanaJeanFL

mpac5000 asked:
Jean, I wouldn't change out the center. I would not have noticed it if you had not pointed it out. The top is wonderful. Hard to believe it is the same quilt. Great job and great combination of fabrics. Love that your background is not a solid. you have come a long way.
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thanks very much mpac! I loved these fabrics the moment I saw them. I didn't notice that center throughout piecing. Maybe its because I made and remade so many blocks (I think 5 stars?) I can probably live with it. I have lots of extras to use for a pieced backing. And I agree, I've come a long way. I can hardly believe how much I've learned in only two years :D
befney asked:
wow really different to any I have seen. great job
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thanks Bethany. They fabric and the layout make this one unique. I'm glad you like it :D
Morag2504 asked:
Lovely Jean, you have been busy :-)
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thank you Morag! I actually finished the 2012 R,B&W top and the 2013 Polka Dot top in Nov (I think). But I got so busy with my daughter's Christmas I'm only now posting. I did finish this one yesterday. Now its on to lots of UFOs and my 2014 goal to learn FMQ!
artbythebay asked:
WOW Jean-- your floral take is just lovely. Mine is still awaiting quilting!
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thanks artbythebay! I think both of our quitls show how sashing affects the overall look. Looking forward to seeing yours quilted.
Darns asked:
Wonderful use of the prints! I wouldn't change the center, either! So different from the dots - love them both! Great job!
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thanks again Darns. I sure learned a lot this year. There was a lot of trial and error which led to the results. I'll be making pieced backs for both with all the "leftovers" and fixed mistakes haha!
