Husband's 50th Birthday T-shirt quilt

Project Description

What are you most proud of? That I got it done in 4 days. And he loved it. Found a really cute Air Force fabric for the binding, but wanted to do it a little bigger so I had to figure out how to do the corners. (I'll put that in another project) What advice would you give someone starting this project? Always make a spare block and use it to test quilting pattern and thread tension as you go. You can also test the binding on this test piece.

What you will need

  • Various t-shirts backed with Pellon SF101 fusible interfacing
  • pieced with Superior thread Masterpiece
  • quilted with Superior Bottom Line and So Fine
  • Fairfield 80/20 Quilters batting
  • Tailor Quilt basting spray
  • backed with 100% cotton fabric.

Q&A with Sandra in CA

Ipanema asked:
What a clever idea, a very masculine quilt. The jersey fabric of the T-Shirts would make it soft and comfy and using your husband's old shirts personalizes it for him and gives it an air of nostalgia. Your binding and backing are nicely chosen as well. An A+ project.
Sandra in CA answered:
Thanks, it was fun surprising him.
desna asked:
This is so so fab and what a wonderful, thoughful and industrious wife you are, he is fortuate to have you;)))) I would so love to make my husband a t-shirt quilt, you have inspired me... will have to do some research:)
Sandra in CA answered:
It only took me 20 years to make him a quilt. I love making quilts that fit a person. I made my daughter a panda quilt, my grandson a monkey quilt. I have the fabric to make my other daughter a tiger quilt. So many quilts, not enough time.
