Hurricane Sandy Quilts

Project Description

What advice would you give someone starting this project? The squares looked much better pieced and quilted than they did individually.

What you will need

  • This project grew out of a collaboration between me and a friend who is principal of an elementary school in East Harlem
  • NYC. A former school employee was affected by Hurricane Sandy. She has two children
  • a boy and girl
  • ages 9 and 12. I prepared muslin squares for the students at the school and the art teacher provide guidance and fabric paint. The students had interviewed the recipients to learn of their hobbies
  • favorite things. After the squared were colored in
  • I pieced them with a one inch sashing and put two borders on. I quilted them with a flannel backing so they would be soft.
