Heart Cupcake Mug Rug

Project Description

What are you most proud of? 10 patterns for $9.99 - I'm always pleased when I can provide value-for-money. This pattern from the Hobby & Fun pattern book is very versatile as you can mix-and-match the cupcake designs. A single cupcake also looks very good as a coaster. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Remember that cupcakes come in all sorts of variations - lemon, chocolate, vanilla, coffee. Use scraps of felt for the icing or add small beads as sprinkles. Play with fabric and have fun.

What you will need

  • Scraps of cotton fabric and a little felt.

Q&A with The Patchsmith

loves2pai4215143 asked:
Your mug rugs are darling! Do you hand stitch these or machine? Your color choices are so nicely chosen.
The Patchsmith answered:
This mug rug was hand stitched but I do both. Some mug rugs have both hand and machine stitching. Hand stitching helps me slow down. To create the cupcake you stitch two pieces of fabric together but even that could be done by hand. As for fabrics - I was thinking of coffee and chocolate cupcakes when I picked the fabric.

You have not only talent, but patience! Beautiful work.
The Patchsmith answered:
What a lovely thing to say - thank you.

Love the look of the cupcakes. My great niece is turning 1 in Sept and I was wondering how this could be converted to a toddler quilt instead of a mug rug.
The Patchsmith answered:
Hi Leslie, You could applique a single cupcake onto six or more 5" background squares and then stitch the squares together, alternating some with 5" fabric charm squares. If the finished quilt isn't big enough then you could add a border. And, if you make an extra 5" square with cupcake, you can turn it into a coaster for the toddler's bedside table. I hope it works out well. Amanda
