Floral free motion art quilt

Project Description

What are you most proud of? It was a great project for practicing free motion quilting. I liked creatively extending the print (flowers/leaves) into the borders without first drawing the design. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Get the magazine and give it a try. It was loads of fun. Make sure there is good thread contrast in extending the print design into the borders. Use a heavier quilting thread so the quilting outline shows up.

What you will need

  • large print and coordinating plain fabrics
  • thread
  • darning foot

Q&A with Lavender Sencha

Majo asked:
It's wonderful. I really like the ghost quilting. What thread did you use?
Lavender Sencha answered:
I used what I had on hand - King Tut for the vanilla, plain old Coats & Clark all purpose for the coral/water melon, and some Gutermann for the green. I had started the vanilla with just some Coats & Clark, but it didn't show up very well, so switched to the King Tut and went over what I had already done. Would have been more happy with the green if I used heavier thread or went over it twice so it stood out more. I could/should have used all vanilla in the coral/water melon border. It was fun so I'll do it again using a larger more colorful print . Had never heard about ghost quilting before picking up the magazine.
