Project Description

What was your source for this quilting project? Improvisational What are you most proud of? That it all just came to me as I was doing it -- it was in my heart as the women gathered and sold the fish from the beach in front of my house when I lived-in the jungles of Guinea-Bissau. It was a 100% spiritual creation. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Try dying fabric with weird things. I tired kola nut because people chew it and it stains their teeth -- I figured it would stain fabric as well. Just relax, breathe and sew!

What you will need

  • I took pieces of cotton "strip pano" handwoven in Guinea-Bissau (West Africa) where I lived
  • dyed it with kola nut
  • and stitched it together for the background. The women are from an African cloth
  • the fish from another cloth
  • and the appliqué was stitched by machine using variegated thread. The patchwork is from my huge stash of African fabric. I tried freehand machine quilting for the first time and then decided to add the beading. This is my first wallhanging. I am contemplating adding more beading (gold glass colored for sand) and maybe some small shells for the beach. Possibly some other embellishment as well (maybe some cloth and beads hanging form the bottom)… I would love to hear if people think I should add more or leave it as is…
