first time stupendous stitching

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I am most proud of breaking out of following patterns/instructions to start following my own lead. This is such an eye-opener, and I have enjoyed the process so much that I cannot wait to do more in this technique. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Don't be afraid to experiment - above all, have fun!

What you will need

  • Cotton fabric for the base
  • otherwise yarns
  • threads
  • fibres
  • embroidery silks inherited from mother and mother-in-law which I never had a use for - until now

Q&A with Champys

eleonard asked:
Love it! Must have taken FOREVER!
Champys answered:
thank you....! indeed it took some time, but it was definitely a case of enjoying the journey - now that I've reached the destination, I can't wait to start the next one.
Gayla JM asked:
You did so much hand work! I love bags and making them. I have made one Stupendous Stitching quilt and just have to get a bag done. Thanks for the inspiration.
Champys answered:
Yes I did a lot of hand work, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed that...... my next project is going to be a waistcoat.
gram.mer asked:
WOW! This is gorgeous! Is this your first attempt at stupendous stitching?
Champys answered:
Yes, really is a first attempt....... I'm so excited that I have invested in a couching foot and hope to do a lot more over the summer. Thank you for your kind comments!
Kamloops Kim asked:
I love the bag! Do you have a pattern for it and if so, where did you get it? I'm not that confident about making up my own patterns. Your hand stitching is lovely.
Champys answered:
Thank you for your kind comment. The shape of the bag is a 'bucket bag' - you may be able to find a pattern for it floating online. If not, there is a pattern for this bag in a book called 'The Bag Making Bible' by Lisa Lam.
Lawendy asked:
Beautiful and useful ? Did you use a pattern for it?
Champys answered:
Thank you for your kind comment. I used a basic bucket-shape bag pattern, and for the handles/binding cut bias tape out of contrasting fabric. I lined the bag with some leftover fabric from another project and made a zipped inside pocket.
