Family Ties

Project Description

What are you most proud of? That I was able to do it for him. Also at the time I made this quilt, beginning in October, 2000, I was the Franklin County Extension Homemaker county president, and was asked to help with the state fair. I was fortunate (and thrilled) to help hang my winning quilt in the Best Of Show display after the judging.. Ida & Lorene were part of the Altus EH club and are shown in the photo "putting the quilt up" and getting ready for the hand quilting group to begin. Their quilting work proceeds were donated. Their frame was set up in the Altus Heritage Museum building in downtown Altus. What advice would you give someone starting this project? If you need ties to begin a tie quilt try the local Good Will stores. I found most of my ties there in Ft Smith, AR. They have them by the box-full.

What you will need

Instructions for family ties quilt
Helen Cook answered:
I didn't have a pattern to go by. I just started using a wedge template to make the plates, using a fabric glue stick to hold the tips in place I then centered them and hand appliqued them to the blocks, then cut the block fabric out beneath them to eliminate bulk. The outside border is just bow ties. I backed all the tie material with featherweight interfacing in order to stabilize it and be able to cut out the pieces without fear of a bias stretch (ties are made on the bias of the fabric) I made it up as I went along. I hope this helps a little.
