Colored Pencil Holder

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I didn't need a pattern -- just did it! What advice would you give someone starting this project? Design your pencil roll to fit the number of pencils you have but leave room for more!

What you will need

  • Batik cotton
  • feed sack white cotton
  • grosgrain ribbon
  • fusible fleece
  • elastic
  • thread.

Q&A with Carol Ann Waugh

Shoestring asked:
Carol Anne, this is a clever project for all levels of sewing enthusiasts. I love the function--the pencil roll is great for traveling, storing, and organizing. Your choice of colorful fabrics are dazzling! Would this sew well using oil cloth for studio brushes?
Carol Ann Waugh answered:
Oil cloth would even be better than the fabrics I chose since it would wouldn't take any of the color from the pencils. Great improvement!
Clove asked:
I was looking for an easy gift to make for a retreat I'm getting ready to attend ,this will be great . thanks for the fabulous idea.Barbara
Carol Ann Waugh answered:
You have given me another idea-- I should make another one to hold all my seam rippers! Hmmmmm.
Jo-Mo asked:
So beautiful! I like the elastic strip idea a lot. I made a pencil roll for my niece a while back but the inside had individual pockets. Your version is much easier to sew and more flexible (literally!).
Carol Ann Waugh answered:
You know me -- I like to make things FAST!
Clove asked:
Carol I made 11 of these and I love them .going to a retreat in Ohio and these are my gifts to the girls.I will post a picture in the projects page.. Thanks so much for the idea.Barbara
Carol Ann Waugh answered:
Nice. They were easy, right? Can't wait to see them all and hear how they were received by your friends!
LaLaLaurie asked:
Carol Anne, I adore this! I just got my 150 Prismacolor Pencil set in the mail today for Lola's Thread Art class. I'm simply not a fan of the bulky tin they came in. Luckily, I came across Lola's recommendation to check out this project of yours - and I love it! I actually made a roll very similar to this to give to my sisters for Christmas as a travel makeup/brush holder. I added a zippered pocket at one end, and a rickrack trim. Where oh where did you find the fabulous fabric you used in the picture above? I'm in love! :)
Carol Ann Waugh answered:
I collect batiks and this piece was in my stash!
