Christmas Log Cabin Quilt

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I was pleased with my fussy-cut applique poinsettia flowers which I embroidered with gold thread to give the quilt a festive touch. What advice would you give someone starting this project? You can arrange the logs in all sorts of ways, but it's very important to have a strong contrast between dark and light fabrics for the best effect.

What you will need

  • Pure cotton fabric
  • cotton thread
  • gold thread
  • polyester wadding (batting).

Q&A with patz in suffolk

K Lee 2Strings asked:
So pretty. The embroidered applique really makes the quilt.
patz in suffolk answered:
This was one of the very first quilts I ever nade and I was really pleased (and surprised) at the way it turned out.
Caraline2 asked:
love it!!!
patz in suffolk answered:
People say it's too good for my husband to sit on during the Christmas services when he's playing the organ, but I don't mind!
tomib asked:
Beautiful. Hadn't seen it b4. R u doing the BOM this year?
patz in suffolk answered:
Thank you! Yes - once I've finished the 2012 one! I have three blocks still to quilt and then to put it all together (I'm doing "quilt as you go", being a bit short on courage! Since Christmas I haven't got around to doing any more, but will psyche myself up to finish it soon as I don't need any more UFOs!
tomib asked:
I hear you on the UFOs. I can't distinguish on your Christmas Log Cabin where you started. Is this an untraditional piecing? four squares in each block?
patz in suffolk answered:
It was very easy and there are 16 blocks in all, each of half light and half dark fabrics, making up 4 large blocks. Does that make sense? This was one of the very first quilts I made, and was very easy. Once the 16 little blocks are made, there are all sorts of permutations and it's fun trying them all out to pick the one that appeals most.
tomib asked:
I think I just saw a YouTube video using this arrangement and using 1 1/2" strips. Not at all like I thought. Am going to try a practice block. Have a great day
patz in suffolk answered:
Good luck!
