Chopping Block Quilt

Project Description

What are you most proud of? This is the first time I used my own ideas for a quilt. I wanted to use the idea of a chopping vegetables for a stir fry. My son worked in restaurants for a while and did some chopping. I also liked the background piecing, which reminds me of close up photos of tree trunks. So, really I used ideas from Creative Quilt Backs, and from Weeks Ringles' Modern Quilt designs. I should have thought out my design and submitted it to Weeks for some feedback. But, I was driven to get this quilt done on a Christmas deadline. Never again! What advice would you give someone starting this project? I should have done a small sample quilt. This was my first queen sized one, started two weeks before Christmas! Also, I should have alternated sewing strips from the bottom up and then top down, so I wouldn't get a bowing in the quilt. I used stitch in the ditch for 95% of the quilt with some x on the bottom border pattern. I would also like to try spray basting as Ann Peterson suggested, rather than pinning. Next time!
