Q&A with Joana Oliveira

ndlz1 asked:
Quite dazzling! Love the movement in your fabric choice.
Joana Oliveira answered:
I hope it will not be too much noise in the end...
ndlz1 asked:
No, because you can use solid sashing, inter-blocks and borders to calm them down if it appears that way to you when you're designing the final project. =) Remember also, that there's always one loud & crazy family member Ha! Ha!
Joana Oliveira answered:
:-) Yes, I'm thinking about my 7 month old baby girl. She is quite loud! I am building smaller blocks (25 cm instead of 32cm) in order to end up with a crib size quilt, more or less... I've decided to use only African fabrics (wax prints) and there is no such thing as solids over there :-)
Surfside6 asked:
Where do you get your African fabrics? I have been liooking for a panel for a long time that I saw at a quilt show. I love what you chose for block. Cannot wait to see the whole thing. Good luck
Joana Oliveira answered:
Thanks :-) I actually bought most of them In Africa! I went to Tanzania on holidays last summer and couldn't resist them. They are also quite easy to find in London. Here in Portugal, where I live, I asked an African lady in the subway where did she buy her lovely garments. She gave me a fabric shop address in Lisbon but it closed down a few years ago. If none of these is an option to you, I suggest you try Etsy or another on-line store like samutex.nl.
