Alternate August 2013 BOM

Project Description

What are you most proud of? Drafing this was quite easy for me using skills Laura taught in the 2013 BOM. The more I draft the happier I am I stuck to learning how. I used a 1:2 ratio based on an 8 inch square draft. Each one inch translates to two inches. I also adjusted the width of the sashing to achieve the right size block. The assembly went smooth and all the lattice sashing lined up with no problems at all. It is also less than 1/8 inch larger than 16 1/2 flower basket block. I'm learning more and more about being precise! What advice would you give someone starting this project? Don't be afraid of drafting. I used a 1 to 2 scale so I could draw the block on one piece of graphing paper. If you're using a ratio remember to account for it when measuring for seam allowances. To be safe add a bit if you''re not sure. It can always be trimmed. I made a second draft that I cut up to help determine the block assembly which proved very helpful. Use scraps on a photo copy to audition fabrics.

Q&A with NanaJeanFL

NanaJeanFL asked:
Hi all- would appreciate your help. I'm considering replacing the March Economy block with the larger version. The existing one looks too small to me. What do you think?
NanaJeanFL answered:
My thinking exactly Darns! I deliberately put off the spools to see where colors might fit in. I sewed a strip of flying geese this afternoon for the lower right side. As always many thanks for your compliments. They mean a lot to me :D
Pam NZ asked:
Oh Jean, I'm absolutely loving your polka dot version and you are oh so right that the flower basket would look out of place on this. I think I'd like to see the spool blocks added before changing the economy block... I think they could balance it out. Maybe? Look at you go girl... nothing gets in your way now! Go Jean!
NanaJeanFL answered:
You are so kind Pam - thanks very much! I agree about the spools. I'm trying to decide whether or not to bring in those grays at this point. We'll see!
lindafink1076294 asked:

NanaJeanFL answered:
Thank you Linda! I agree - I can see a whole quit with this one :-)
