Alaskan Animals for Aiden

Project Description

What are you most proud of? This is the first quilt I have ever made using my own design and not following a pattern. It's also the biggest project I've done to date and the first time I added a true free motion quilting element. So, a lot of firsts in this one project.

What you will need

  • Animal Spirit's fabric by Robert Kaufman and various other prints.

Q&A with Polarjo

posio42 asked:
Lovely use of the material to create the animal images! I'm about to launch myself into a quilt for my grandson that morphed from a "dinosaur" quilt to a "my favorite animals" quilt (including dinosaurs), also my first without a pattern. Do you have any suggestions for sources on the animal images? You did a great job in keeping them on a similar scale.
Polarjo answered:
Thanks. I think you're giving me a little more credit than I deserve. The Animal Spirits fabric by Robert Kaufman is a screen print with all the animals already on it. I just cut out each animal and put the strips around them to make uniform sized blocks.
Ann Petersen asked:
Wow! I'm very impressed. Such a great quilt and SO many firsts! Congratulations!
Polarjo answered:
Thanks Ann. You're classes helped tremendously! I'm in Casa Grande, AZ, by the way, so maybe we'll run into each other at a quilting event some day.
ChristmasEv asked:
Wonderful quilt...did you free motion each block and then join everything together into the finished quilt? You did a. Eautiful Jo. On your quilting...I too have just begun learning the craft...look forward to seeing more of your work!
Polarjo answered:
Thank you. No, I didn't use the "quilt as you go" method. I quilted this after the top had been completed (sashing, borders, etc) as one big piece.
