For twelve years, I worked nights and weekends and snow days to write a novel called, Solomon's Puzzle. I was so happy when I finished it and it was published. People were reading it and writing me to say they couldn't put it down! I decided that I needed a quilt to take with me to book signings. Because the book title is taken from a traditional quilt block and all the chapter titles are named after traditional quilt blocks (such as Birds in the Air - chapter 1, Rising Sun- Chapter 2), I made the quilt with those patterns. The book also has a wonderful quilt store in it called Eight Hands Around which serves as the heart of the community. I used parts of the Eight Hands Around block (also the name of chapter 10) to create the border. People loved the quilts and so I wrote the pattern. The pattern is unique because in addition to having instructions for all 12 blocks, it also tells why I chose the chapter titles/quilt blocks that I did, including comments about the symbolism in the blocks and the colors. Now the quilt has been a Block of the Month in several classes near my home. A group of quilters who live all over the country are making the quilt as a challenge this year. I hope you'll join this unique community. Please keep in touch and post pictures. Extra help, including videos of classes are available on the novel's website: solomonspuzzle.com Note; there's a bonus pattern, an alternative pattern, for block six included in this online version.
