It was one of those days when the weather was making any thought of work improbable. So what could I do, to make the heat of summer fade... and creativity come to life? It was then, that I pondered starting a new project with something that I'd not considered before. That of making a themed quilt; all about SHOES! This quilt starts with a grid of twelve blocks, and then each is appliqued with images -- all relating to shoes. Wanting a new concept for the outer border, I selected wording to go all around, and introduced a polka dot fabric that I had received from my mother's fabric stash. This is a really fun project to put together and filled with color! The added opportunity to dig into your button jar and embellish it with fancy buttons completes the design. Pieces are cut to these measurements -- blocks are 4"; polka dot border is 1.5" wide; outer border is 3.5" wide. Lettering is Segoe Marker in several sizes. This 18-page PDF pattern has colored illustrations of each appliqued block, clear instructions, and full-sized templates for the applique process. Both lettering and appliques are reversed and ready to trace onto the fusible web. Use my fabric choices as your guide and have fun with this project. Then you can decide whether to add the wording or leave them out. Enjoy! BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY You should already know how to use a sewing machine and some of the fancier stitches. Preferable, you would also have knowledge of fusible applique and cutting out fabrics using rotary cutting tools. If not, you can still learn by referring to quilting books that teach these methods. From the different applique techniques, I like this one the best -- and it is the easiest to do. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Quilt size: approximately: 22" x 18 1/2"
