This makes a lovely little I-spy quilt for a small child or a lap quilt for an older person. The design is very versatile - make as many, or as few, hexagons as you wish; the completed scrap designs can be appliqued to the background or the background can be made from hexagons too. A hexagon design is then hand quilted in white perle thread on the dark background (in a similar fashion to Sashiko quilting) to complete the Oriental look. You could, of course, use any brightly coloured and patterned scraps on any colour background then just quilt it with your own designs in 'normal' thread. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY hand piecing of hexagons

Supplies Needed

  • 60 to 100 scraps of Oriental prints each about 3 inches square
  • 1 yard background - dark blue or navy
  • 1 yard backing fabric - could be the same dark blue as the background
