I grew up in South India, and it is hot and dusty. Our floors were swept and mopped twice a day to keep the endless dust at bay. Once the sweeping and mopping of the inside of the house was done, attention would be transferred to the porch. It would also be swept and washed down, and then, while the concrete was still wet, a small kolam would be quickly drawn at the entryway to the house. With a small handful of rice flour, the dots that acted as the grid would be laid out. Then, depending on the mood of the kolam maker, either a simple monochrome kolam would emerge, or a complex multi-coloured work of art. It was the most transient of art forms, lasting only a day - the next morning, the porch would be washed and the kolam redrawn. I've been working on a simple kolam pattern. This particular kolam is a bit of a starter kolam - it's the kind that little children learn to make, before working on more advanced designs. It's also the kind that you quickly draw on your doorstep, if you are in a hurry and have other chores to get on with. Intertwined has no curved seams - it is all constructed with squares and rectangles. It is a perfect project for someone with a few quilt tops under their belt. Rotary cutting skills are helpful, as is knowledge of strip piecing. Each Intertwined block is 22.5 inches square, making this an ideal pattern if you are trying to make a large quilt in a hurry. My sample is 80" square, and uses only 9 blocks! I grew up in India, I've lived in 3 countries, in 6 different cities before putting down roots in Toronto. I've been quilting since I was 16 - my first project was a Double Irish Chain. Inspired by many awesome sewing blogs, I've been sewing garments since 2006. When traveling, I've always taken pictures of patterns, mosaic, tile, rangolis - they serve as quilting inspiration. The Global Nomad Quilt Company came about as a way of sharing this inspiration with you. I blog about the Global Nomad Quilt Company at I blog about garment sewing at
