PATTERN DETAILS

This quilts romantic name was inspired by medieval gardens which were often enclosed by walls or impenetrable hedges. There are many examples of enclosed "secret"gardens in paintings to be found in museums around the world. The Hortus Conclusus quilt is a medallion style quilt with a centre motif surrounded by seven borders. Except for the outer borders, all borders are 4 (10 cm) wide. To prevent a boring and repetitive "rhythm", borders pieced from 2 7/8 (7.5 cm) half-square triangles alternate with strip borders made up of fabric stripes of different widths. The centre block is a traditional block called "Castle Garden". The name of the block and the green fabrics set the garden theme very early on in this project which culminates in the hand-quilting motif used in the outer border. The quilted leaves and spirals are a lasting souvenir of a trip to Wales and the wonderful quilts which can be admired there. We are planning a smaller version, so if you are interested, e-mail us at info@quilt-around-the-world.com. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY cutting and sewing triangles handquilting staying power

Quilt around the World
Jutta and Johann have been working together for over two years setting up the platform for their new independent and international online quilt magazine Quilt around the World (www.quilt-around-the-world.com). Johann concentrates mainly on the technical issues, but is very involved in the design process of every project Jutta tackles for Quilt around the World. Johann is Austrian and started quilting in 2010. In his spare time, he loves doing dangerous things: mountain climbing, skiing, hiking through the wilderness and motorcycling. Jutta is Bavarian and started quilting in 1996. When she isn’t quilting, she enjoys reading, going to the movies, swimming, travelling, or trying to keep up with Johann on almost vertical hiking trails or ski slopes in the Alps.
